When The Pressure Riveting Nut Is Rusted

Self Clinching Nuts are a commonly used fastening element, but if they are exposed to a humid environment for a long time, they are prone to rust. If left untreated, rusty nuts can affect fastening performance and even lead to fastener failure. Here are some ways to deal with severe rust on Rivet Nuts.

Use lubricants: If the nut self clinching fasteners are not severely corroded, you can use some lubricants, such as lubricating oil, spray, etc. to remove rust. The lubricant penetrates the surface of the nut, softening and breaking down the rust, allowing it to loosen before the nut can be unscrewed with a wrench or pliers.

Grinding with alumina abrasive cloth: If the surface of the nut is seriously rusted, it can be polished with alumina abrasive cloth. First remove the nut, then wipe the surface of the nut with an alumina emery cloth to remove the rust layer until the surface becomes smooth. If the rust layer is relatively thick, you can tap the nut with a metal hammer to loosen the rust layer and then grind it.

Chemical cleaning: For heavily corroded nuts, chemical cleaning can be used to remove the rust layer. First remove the nut, then soak the nut in chemical cleaning agent, follow the instructions, generally need to soak for about 20 minutes. The cleaning agent will break down the rust layer, allowing it to come off, then rinse with water and allow to dry.

Replace the nuts: If the nuts are heavily rusted, such as flare-in nuts, that persist after repeated cleaning or grinding, then the nuts need to be replaced. When replacing nuts, it is necessary to select fasteners of the same type as the original nuts to ensure that the fastening performance will not be affected.

Regardless of the method used, it is important to be safe when dealing with rusted rivet nuts to avoid injury to yourself or others. At the same time, in order to prevent the nut from rusting again, some preservatives can be used to treat the nut to prolong its service life.
